The Amtrak train headed North. I was on my way to New York with $85,000 in a Polo backpack. I was working my little college girl look. No one was paying me any attention as I sat alone reading The Washington Post and listening to Tabi Bonney on my iPod. There was a small article in the Metro section of the paper about the shooting around my way. The article didn’t say much, but it did mention that Bam got shot pretty bad and that Lil Quan got killed. According to the Post, a gunman opened fire on the two juveniles, killing one, and then fled north on Georgia Avenue.

There was also an article about the shooting at Club Uptown. It said an altercation inside the club between two rival groups led to a shootout outside the club moments later and that a 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was being withheld until his family was notified. Nothing else in the paper held my attention. I folded it up and stuffed it inside my backpack. I pulled out my Wahida Clark book, Every Thug Needs a Lady, and dug into it.

Before I knew it, I was in New York. I had just finished the last few chapters of my novel. I stuffed it into my backpack and got my mind right. I had to be on point. Just like the last time, I called Jay as soon as I got off the train. “I’m at Penn Station.”

“Good girl. Stay on point and it’s all good.”

“Okay.”

“Go ’head and jump in a cab. I’ma’ call Twin and let him know you on your way. Handle your business.”

“I got you.” I ended the call and headed uptown.

The cab ride through the New York traffic took forever, but I made it to Harlem in good time. The Arab cab driver was acting like a bitch. He didn’t want to wait for me, even though I told him I would give him an extra $50. I wanted to cuss his ass out, but I couldn’t stand any unwanted attention. I left it alone.

St. Nicholas Avenue was full of life; people were all over the place. Just like last time, a few dudes were standing in front of Twin’s building. They all had that Harlem swagger. Twin’s man, Black, recognized me from the last time. He nodded at me. I nodded back.

“What’s up, ma?” he said.

“I’m good.” I looked up and down the busy street as I headed for the building. It was hot as hell outside. I was in a hurry to get inside the apartment.

Black led me inside the building. All eyes were on me, but I could tell the dudes in front of the building now had an idea that I was about business. I didn’t have time for bullshit, and I wasn’t in New York to meet any new friends.

Inside the elevator, Black said, “Ay, ma, I ain’t tryin’ to get in your businss, but can I ask you a question?”

I looked at Black and studied his eyes.
